@narada @dickflatteningenthusiast It's been a thing in Metal for at least a decade, if not more. The hot sound for years was "underground thrash circa 1987", and has now morphed into unironically copying Meshuggah and 2000's Swedish Death Metal. It isn't just Metal either, the whole Synthwave and to a lesser extent Vaporwave genres were about making old sounds new again, and I say this as someone who likes some of this.

Even top-40 pop music is starting to emulate 80's production sounds.

Entertainment truly has run out of ideas.
