i suppose some of it comes down to a self-owned company is responsible to its customers. with a VC backed company you may be the person paying for services but you are not the customer. the venture capitalist firm is that company’s customer, and their #1 priority is making the VCs happy. the fact that you even consume the product and pay for it is just really incidental on getting the VC’s more money in -> more money out.
maybe i’m just bitter and tired of seeing people be allowed to call themselves open source and then bricking up the doors with corporate editions.
