Alex@rtnVFRmedia Suffolk UKI set up phone systems for work - VOIP sacrifices resilience for convenience, and has pushed the requirement for backup power supplies to the enduser (I'm also sceptical that VDSL or fibre networks will keep going for hours after a power cut as the street cabinets just have the same batteries as a large UPS unlike the huge battery in a traditional Telephone Exchange - do the telcos even check the telemetry and maintain the batteries?)
