Last boost: I genuinely miss landline phones and also payphones.

feld (feld@bikeshed.party)'s status on Monday, 15-Jan-2024 09:56:34 JST feld @vfrmedia @sidereal @cam IIRC all the residential phone service providers that are VOIP in the USA have to follow our 911 requirements so they all have a built-in UPS in the CPE equipment. I've seen it for both fiber and cable internet providers that have "landline" phone bundles -

Alex@rtnVFRmedia Suffolk UK (vfrmedia@social.tchncs.de)'s status on Monday, 15-Jan-2024 09:56:35 JST Alex@rtnVFRmedia Suffolk UK I set up phone systems for work - VOIP sacrifices resilience for convenience, and has pushed the requirement for backup power supplies to the enduser (I'm also sceptical that VDSL or fibre networks will keep going for hours after a power cut as the street cabinets just have the same batteries as a large UPS unlike the huge battery in a traditional Telephone Exchange - do the telcos even check the telemetry and maintain the batteries?)

Camilo (cam@hachyderm.io)'s status on Monday, 15-Jan-2024 09:56:38 JST Camilo @sidereal landlines got terrible and I don’t know why we abandoned them in South Florida because they worked better during hurricanes. They say the newer “landlines” which work using voip will work just as well but well I haven’t tested it yet so I don’t believe it,
