I don't know why the insurance companies have that stance because the way the panels are installed actually reinforces the roof and reduces the damage from wind and water.
You do have to pay the power company even if disconnected but you have an account. You can cancel your account but then you cannot sell back extra power or use the grid if your solar is broken. Monthly fee is $30 + taxes
