Yeah, I mean, the equivalent high-end workstation would be pricey now, just we entered a strange "CPU monoculture" for about 20 years and we're sort of slowly coming out. It does turn out, though, that in the tail end of the 90s or the early 00s, if you hit up surplus stores and dumpsters near the aerospace engineering companies (the right parts of, roughly, Manhattan Beach through Torrance) you could get an entire Beowulf cluster for cheap/free...then blow out the savings trying to get weird cables to hook them all up. "Badass UltraSPARC, 27" CRT, amazing...I have a Linux floppy that boots to minicom to actually use the thing, though because I can't find the weird monitor cable anywhere but I found an adapter for the serial port."
