    @pfefferle When any mastodon post includes a link, it effectively creates a DDOS attack as every server that finds that post queries the linking website for a preview image. On a small hosted blog like mine (alberniweather dot ca) with 2GB of RAM from the virtual host, it dies for 5-10 minutes every time I post a link to it or make a new blog post until the "attack" is over. It's in the pipeline to be addressed... but has been for many years apparently.

      @chris@mstdn.chrisalemany.ca The root cause isn’t ActivityPub specifically, it’s each Mastodon server that receives your post then retrieving link preview card data (associated image, description of the article) separately. Caching content using a CDN like fastly or Cloudflare can assist with the traffic, but not resolve it completely. There is a GitHub issue about it and it’s on the roadmap, so that’s good news!
