Once someone masters a form, they know how to adhere to it while breaking the rules. Or something like that; like breaking the rules in a meaningful way requires a deep understanding of them. FF6 turned over nearly all the tropes and still had a very engaging storyline.

Well, my copy of Bullfinch was on the shelf that is a little hard to reach (there's a pile of computer stuff in front of it) but it looks like what Oedipus (speaking of psychology) got was that the sphinx stopped accosting travelers on the road to Thebes. This is an acceptable reward.
