(2) It was appropriate in a do-or-die military situation but is otherwise not a rule to live by. (3) Spock was sacrificing himself because he had an emotional drive to heroism and then, as he always did, lied about how it fit with the dictates of logic; it was a face-saving rationalization, not a moment of wisdom.
