   @sophiesometimes @Rch @portugeek @SleepyCatten I think the things that get missed are: (1) This line of thinking literally killed Spock. (2) It was appropriate in a do-or-die military situation but is otherwise not a rule to live by. (3) Spock was sacrificing himself because he had an emotional drive to heroism and then, as he always did, lied about how it fit with the dictates of logic; it was a face-saving rationalization, not a moment of wisdom.

     @Rch okay I’m not a very big Trekkie and I haven’t seen the original movies in about 30 years but didn’t they abandon that entire line of thinking in literally the next damn movie?

     @Rch I know what you're on about, little miss, and you're conflating others' wants with needs.

     Your needs outweight others' wants.

     For example:

     Child: "Parents: I'm trans. I need to transition."
     Parents: "But what about us? We don't want you to change!"

     In this example, the child is correct and the parents are being transphobic and selfish.
