That, I'm afraid, is dependent on the instance's software.
For example, you can do it with #Firefish (see: https://firefish.social) and #Qoto (see: https://qoto.org).

* Firefish (formerly Calckey), is a fork of #Misskey. Misskey is a Japanese made #Fediverse software.
* Qoto is a fork of Mastodon, with more features than the original Mastodon software.
As far as I know, the mainline #Mastodon software will never add this feature (and was suggested a lot of times before).
I'm not sure which other Fediverse software have this feature. It's actually very useful in content discovery; and avoiding creating multiple accounts.
