for better or worse, the fediverse is not a great place to find news. often the reaction to major political events is delayed. this may be explained by the demographics, since these political events are often important to bipoc groups that are not well represented here.

something to note about representation on the fediverse. as much as gargron is jokingly called "the CEO of Mastodon" this place isn't a commercial venture, really. John Mastodon might develop the most popular software on the net, but he doesn't control all of the servers that make it up. ⬅️ this is important.

the constellation of indg.club, turtleisland.social, turtleisland.video, and turtleisland.art; create a nucleation point for indigenous people to gather around on the fediverse.

because of how the fediverse works, this is what you need to do to gain representation. you have to create your own servers and start getting people from your own community to join. often this means soft-forking the software to make it work better for your needs.

@Rushkoff@social.coop the fundamental distinction I'd draw is that the federated space is noncommercial - a non capitalist network embedded in capitalist infrastructure - and therefore its success criteria are not the growth-centric ones of a capitalist endeavor. What those criteria should be/are is under discussion and consensus will emerge over time. But "grow or die" ain't it - beware of analyses framing Fediverse dynamics in terms defined by prior social media platforms driven by profit concerns
