First, when US people say "liberal" they mean "social democrat" or "leftie" or possibly "socially/morally liberal", not "economically liberal, wants to liberalize government regulation and economic influence".

For them "social-liberal" is repeating yourself and "liberal-conservative" is a contradiction rather than a triangulation. Don't get me started on "neoliberal".

Second, what's right-wing in Europe is center-center in the US.
