If you ever do want to try apps, , there are quite a number you can use on iPad, for example Ice Cubes is good.

Toot! and Ivory are good too, and many others. (Plus the official app of course, which is just called "Mastodon".)

Because Mastodon is an open platform, you don't need to use the official apps at all. The third party apps get just as much access to all the features, and tend to do a better job than the official app.
