I don't have any explanation other than old farts being grumpy, except some of those "farts" aren't even that old.
When it comes to XMPP in particular, it often gets down to:
— But you can do it with XMPP too! You just have to install client A.
— But I also want that thing to work
— Then client B is your friend!

But why would I want to do all that if I can just use Matrix? And in addition to that, all your not-so-techie friendlets can use it too — all without jumping through a myriad of hoops!
