Essentially, codecs are improving all the time, a 320kbps mp3 from 2005 will sound much worse than a 320kbps mp3 from 2020 transcoded from the same flac file with the same settings because the codecs have improved significantly in that time.

.flac is to music storage as .iso is to non-music disk storage.
it's basically as good as having a physical copy of (thing)
