I understood bullying as a kid and that I was rejected by many (still am) due to my noncompliance, but the idea of doing what those assholes wanted in order to try to mitigate the abuse seemed incredibly tedious and like the worst possible thing to do. OTOH I did make half-assed attempts at fitting in/following rules from time to time into early adulthood. Why do humans lean towards responding to oppression with compliance?
