Measurement systems are mostly about the practical solutions they offer and the ability to communicate scale among parties. Of course, there are also deeper questions to ask...if it's great that a tablespoon is 3 teaspoons, why are we optimizing for taking 1/3 there? One finds a treasure trove of practical history this way.
