But with crowdfunding:
- You're investing into a product, even if you might not get the product in the end (depending on the tiers and if final product becomes a thing or not)
- Typically there's no milestones / checkups in place, which incidentally you have for most grants; Open Licences would allow that check to be actually done.
- Many crowdfunded products ended up closing down, screwing the people later down, specially if there's an online service
