They indeed succeed at exerting control over the state outside of democratic processes. This is even decentralized (there are many corporations) and distributed (via stock exchanges), like you wanted.

I guess this is not what you had in mind. I wonder what you had in mind then. How does it avoid the downsides of corporations?
