I feel like the prophet Samuel approach is a rather good way to look at it; assume its something else and tell God you're here if He needs you. Some of the desert fathers wrote about how they'd battle demonic oppression and be tricked into letting their guard down only for it to come back stronger after they'd let their guard down and become 'proud' of "their" accomplishment (paraphrasing). I wish I had the excerpts handy to share on that, and hope I'm not misremembering. I'm also open to the idea of God speaking or showing in a way people will receive His message. I don't discount the possibly of The Theotokos appearing at Guadalupe, for example, but I also don't base my faith on such things.
