It is a market-system, but not a free-market system in the classic sense, because protectionism is utilized for the benefit of the nation. If your state has a successful show industry and you want to keep employment and industry healthy, it is perfectly acceptable for a tarrif on foreign shoes to go into place in order to keep your industry strong. Things can get fuzzy at that point, because tarrifs tend to create retaliatory tarrifs. With a country like the USA with its vast land and resources, it shouldn't be too much trouble to have an economy that's fairly independent of the global system provided it has the manufacturing in place. We had that once, and we can have it again. Not that we should flip the bird to the world, but it makes sense to care more for your own people than for the explicit interests of financial capitalist elites.
