I attended the rally at Pauley Pavilion on the UCLA Campus in 1985. Until I heard his speech, I had only a vague idea of what it meant to be a black in the apartheid South Africa. I knew that we, the Japanese, were treated as honorary whites there in spite of our skin color because both countries profited greatly from the economic relationship.
