@fu With all due respect, I think you and the auto industry are making the same mistake. You're seeking an alternate explanation when the answer is staring you in the face.

The auto industry thinks customers like Tesla's very silly design flourishes. You think Tesla owners are, essentially, cult members who aren't thinking. But the obvious answer here is that people really like electric cars!
