The human ear here's really well in the midrange, so it's usually pulled down in most mastering. In mixing too, but that's a track by track, instrument by instrument finery. If you leave the midrange too high, it'll drown out both ends of the spectrum. It's what makes stuff sound "boxy." If something isn't sounding right on whatever ever device, I'd eq there first.
