I don't find them as virtuous as felines nor do I have any sense of kinship with dogs, and generally dislike pack hunters, doubly so sadistic ones like most canids are, so I don't feel bad if I have to slay them. I'll certainly be much more humane in killing a dog for emergency food than they'll be in their daily routine.
I highly respect cats as the ultimate expression of grace in the animal kingdom, they're generally one-on-one combatants, much prefer killing prey instantly over brutally torturing live prey, and they have an emotional depth that few creatures do. They're also either small or absurdly strong, so they're not good prey regardless, and they're very good at killing the things that are too small for me to kill easily and I hate, like mice. In short, much better allies than food.
I also love octopuses, lizards, equines and frogs/toads, but they don't score as many reasons to not eat as cats do.
