Sometimes they're used as sort of ideograms and assembled to form "phrases", and ambiguous ones at that, but when used alone, their meaning (intended as well as perceived) may vary *a lot*. Recently, a thumbs-up emoji was ruled to be a valid, legal assent to a contract, despite one of the parties claiming they used it merely to acknowledge the *message* about the contract.</hat>
