<hat="serious">That's actually quite an interesting question about emojis. Sometimes they're used as sort of ideograms and assembled to form "phrases", and ambiguous ones at that, but when used alone, their meaning (intended as well as perceived) may vary *a lot*. Recently, a thumbs-up emoji was ruled to be a valid, legal assent to a contract, despite one of the parties claiming they used it merely to acknowledge the *message* about the contract.</hat>

@welshpixie @mooncube For those interested: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/07/07/world/canada/canada-thumbs-up-emoji-contract.html?smid=tw-nytimes&smtyp=cur (hint: activate Reader View in Firefox then reload)

(aside: past the intro of the order, the magistrate refers to the parties by their first names. I'd never seen that so far.)

Canadian Court Rules 👍 Emoji Counts as a Contract Agreement
        from By Michael Levenson
The ruling pointed to what a judge called the “new reality in Canadian society” that courts would have to confront as more people express themselves with thumbs, hearts and smiley faces.

@aaribaud @welshpixie Love this, emoji meanings and how they evolve are so fascinating. Basically like any other language at this point.

Sometimes I come across people, often 40+, who still use 🙂 thinking it’s a genuine smile, while it reads super passive aggressive to everybody else. My mind immediately goes “woah, what did I say?“ haha.
