Yes, this is all about them going all in on snaps. I was researching that lxd move. It's probably a reaction to Debian porting it outside of snaps. It has the apache license so its safe but Ubuntu could easily close source some upcoming management tools. No big loss since you can use virt-manager to manage containers and theres other ones that work too.
Red hat really opened the doors for all this crap.
