    anti-discrimination research and enforcement I'm pretty sure. but that's the same reason (afaik) for the various "race" categories that they publish the data for. so as long as I'm not mistaken about that they should really just have a giant section full of of check boxes "select all that apply to you" and when they publish the data label it "groups" or something. I dunno I'm sure it would still piss someone off but seriously who cares

    should add stuff like "north easterner" "southerner" "texan" "californian" it would actually be really interesting to see the percentage of people living in texas that identify as "californian" change over time :laugh:
