regarding my original question of race versus ethnicity, are you saying you see it as genetics versus culture? or something else?
I'm a bit confused because that doesn't seem to fit with what you pointed out, that argentinians of german descent view themselves as white and not as various other things. or is there a significant cultural divide going on in the country? I haven't spent time there
> it’s a flawed assumption
less assumption, more differences between our respective working definitions. but I'm generally curious to learn how others use words
> nobody outside of the west uses it to describe themselves
I'm aware. however "not being used elsewhere" != "not a meaningful distinction"
that isn't necessarily to claim that it is or is not a useful category, merely that the one does not follow from the other
> Americans are different and will cite ethnicity over their American Nationality for varying reasons
seems natural to me given how short the western history is here and how many different places the people who came to live here emigrated from. when you've got grandparents that are (lets suppose) japanese, swedish, and mexican that's recent enough that you're likely to be in contact with at least a few relatives who live in other countries
just a different, somewhat more nomadic way of looking at things
