what an excellent year 1977 was! clearly one of the best. far too many bangers to list them all, but here are my picks:

Germany: using telegraph as an instrument https://y.com.sb/watch?v=kNpW9WqbCiY&list=PLA20FAE0BC3CC448B&index=6

Luxembourg: funky schlager goth version of Frere Jacques https://y.com.sb/watch?v=JxFkEKlDpJM&list=PLA20FAE0BC3CC448B&index=7

Switzerland: a fucking alpine horn! https://y.com.sb/watch?v=IwqxloYwsJg&list=PLA20FAE0BC3CC448B&index=12

Finland: a powerful song about a witch https://y.com.sb/watch?v=1rbM-gXnbCY&list=PLA20FAE0BC3CC448B&index=16

France: it just sticks to your head https://y.com.sb/watch?v=UHDhcHRrtAQ&list=PLA20FAE0BC3CC448B&index=18

Pepe Lienhard Band performing "Swiss Lady", the (obviously) Swiss entry at the 1977 Eurovision Song Contest. For the second year in a row, Switzerland also sent a bit gimmicky entry (as evidenced by the yodeling and that traditional Alpic instrument whose name escapes me right now - any help?), an entry however which I can't help liking :-) Note that the guitarist is Pino Gasparini, who'd also represent Switzerland in 1985, with another personal favorite of mine. Update: SundownerDrifting informs me that the instrument in question is called the alphorn (thanks for the info!). So now you - and I - know :-D

      Eurovision 1977 - Finland
Monica Aspelund performing "Lapponia", the Finnish entry at the 1977 Eurovision Song Contest. One of Finland's most wonderful and underrated entries (and heaven knows they have quite a few!) and certainly the most unusual song in that year's contest, this is a song that beautifully combines the fairytale element of the lyrics (it talks about a mythological witch) with a "Nordic jazz" ambience in the melody and the arrangement, all perfectly helped by Monica Aspelund's excellent performance (right up to the high-pitched note at the song's climax!). Note that this wasn't the Aspelund family's only forray at the contest: in 1983, Monica's sister, Ami, would represent Finland with "Fantasiaa", also a wonderful entry itself.

      Eurovision 1977 - France
Marie Myriam performing "L'Oiseau et l'Enfant" ("The Bird and the Child"), the French entry at the 1977 Eurovision Song Contest. Well, what can I say about such a richly-deserved all-time classic? In the very strong field of the '77 contest, the French still managed to blow all competition away with a true masterpiece - an anthem for love with beautiful poetic lyrics, immensely helped by an excellent arrangement and - most of all - a simply SOARING performance by Marie Myriam (kudos also to the backing vocals, certainly among the strongest to ever be heard at the contest!). It's no wonder that this gave them their 5th victory - though, strangely, also their last to this day.
