Things work a bit differently on here, partly for safety reasons.

I'd recommend searching for all the hashtags you want and following them. This will automatically show posts with that tag in your home timeline, even from people you don't follow:

There's also another feature called Groups where you follow a group account, and you will automatically see anything posted to that group:
