In a way, it’s worse, because the fiction it’s trying to install can’t even be argued to serve the function of holding society together, as Christianity had done. It’s otherwise so much the same: to tell the truth is dangerous and blasphemous, it must not be said that humans came into being through natural, evolutionary means, listen to the holy men, have the faith of a child, etc.
