I can't say for sure in the US, but from my experience in Australia and Europe with Ford, Mercedes/Smart, VW, and Chrisler, they usually welcome the feedback and are involved in the resolution. There's a paper trail ($0 invoices, reports and emails) and sometimes low-priority recalls as well (even for cars far out of warranty)
