@atomicpoet @mastodonusercount The problem with huge server maintenance costs is that most people would just rather sell their data or have ads intead of paying up monthly feed or donations.
But servers aren't free... Yet people have gotten used to the idea of free websites, videos, blogs, chats etc. so all the voluntary payment stuff is kind of off-putting.
Signal's constant donate-nagging is especially irritating. Telegram doesn't do that... nor does WhatsApp.
