@paparatti @checkervest We're in Hong Kong, which is decades behind for both British and Chinese reasons.
They don't teach thinking, it's all vocabulary, math problems, general studies facts, ridiculous amounts of homework and art, which they manage to make the kid not like even though he is artistic in his spare time. Teachers are authoritarian and yell at kids, though less than in the Catholic school he went before (this is a secular school).
The kids are not as kind as in Sweden, but far kinder than what I see in US films and series (exaggerated?) and hear from actual US people.
