I think this is exactly right, and the reason micropayments kept failing was not the “micro“ part, but the UX friction. There needs to be some way for a person browsing the web to set some amount of money that they’re willing to give out entirely passively to sites they visit, with essentially no thought per click. Which is exactly what ads do (in a wildly inefficient and society-destroying way).
