@kepstin when i mention the 'renderer' or whatever, i mean whatever series of decisions and implementation details end up creating a character on the screen. if there's code somewhere that can make really nice-looking text, it doesn't matter at all in practice, since nobody's configuring it properly! whatever system, technical or social, is at fault, that's the system i'm talking about
