silverpill@cuchaz Yggdrasil is very cool, and it is faster than Tor. It doesn't provide anonymity though (also a bit harder to configure because you need to manually select peers).
From my experience, Tor performance is good enough for federated microblogging. It may become a problem for large instances but this could be seen as advantage that helps the network grow horizontally
