How to a run a Tor instance of #Mitra:

    https://codeberg.org/silverpill/mitra/src/branch/main/docs/onion.md

Tor instances are much easier to deploy because they don't require a DNS name, an SSL certificate and a public IP address. You can run it at home on a single-board computer without permission from any authority, while enjoying the privacy provided by Tor.

Normally Tor instances can't federate with clearnet instances and therefore form a separate network. However, it is possible to configure a clearnet instance to talk to both networks. Currently administrator needs to install a proxy like Privoxy to do that, but I'll add a configuration option that will make this functionality available out of the box.

@ceresbzns Not much, but I'll try to popularize it.

Ultimately, there needs to be some kind of bridge between the two sides, but opt-in connectivity is also nice to have and easy to implement.

      This is extremely cool.

Is there much activity on the onion side of the fediverse?

@silverpill wait, Tor solves (or avoids) the static IP and/or NAT punching issues with home hosting?

That's very interesting... I never thought of Tor as a virtual Public network before, but now that I think about it for like ... a minute, of course it is.

I've been planning to use something like Yggdrasil (another vPn) for a project, but from the sound of this, Tor might get the job done too. I'll have to do some research.

@cuchaz Yggdrasil is very cool, and it is faster than Tor. It doesn't provide anonymity though (also a bit harder to configure because you need to manually select peers).

From my experience, Tor performance is good enough for federated microblogging. It may become a problem for large instances but this could be seen as advantage that helps the network grow horizontally

@don @ceresbzns No, poa.st is clearnet instance (with frontend available as onion service). According to FediList the biggest Tor instance is Ryona Agency, but these stats could be incomplete
