the relays host the content, apparently: https://nostr.com/relays.

when someone posts content it can go to multiple relays at once. other people go to the relay to fetch the data. it differs from AP in that there's no "federation" aspect between relays like you would see from instances here, people fetch data directly from multiple different relays.
