It started because I feel in love with a clothing style but many of the people wearing it wore a hairstyle considered cultural appropriation where I'm from. I asked on Mastodon and was told that it was a whole subculture and no, the hairstyle is not seen that way. I then went into a music hole and it really speaks to me, as a late 80s club kid, it hits deep.
