I agree and disagree. I'm more inclined to engage with people who have a profile pic and introduction. It lets you know a little about them.
That being said it's your choice how much or little you put into your Mastodon account. If you don't want to add a profile pic or introduction, then don't. I follow some with neither, if you post stuff I like I will follow regardless.
