@whvholst @pettter @rysiek Hopefully it will inspire better systems. I mean talking about email spam..I've been running my own mail server for ten years now and I still haven't bothered to set up a spam filter. Don't need it. Can't remember the last time I got a spam mail -- it does happen, but it's quite rare. It is absolutely possible to build systems that prevent these issues if you put a little thought into it.
Will be interesting to see how Mastodon does on that front...spam kinda helps companies like Twitter as long as it's not *completely* out of control...increases user count, increases engagement, helps them sell ads. But here, where many instances are run on donations and volunteers and each additional user means higher costs, there's a good incentive to wipe that shit out...
