@mushroom_soup i once read a medieval japanese text in a seminar, usually it was just the prof and us western students, but one time we had a japanese girl there. Nearly everything we thought about the text turned out to be wrong, sometimes we had just gotten the grammar wrong, sometimes we didn't get allusions or references. What a wake up call! There's lots of 'religious objects' of all kinds in academia...
