Do you have any evidence for such a massive claim?
Appel is known for making terrible quality computer hardware and making terrible business decisions, maybe that could be what almost drove them to bankruptcy rather?
The current Appel is no different, but there's just so many sheep handing them money that they can make huge profits no matter what business decision they make.

They're really keen on making the customer pay $2000 for a computer and then taking a 30% of whatever the customer rents, plus a yearly fee from every proprietary software developer, but as far as I'm aware, the latter makes them slightly more profit than the former, so I don't see how making it an option to use standard hardware would be a "mistake".
