On Hiroyuki Nishimura (see today’s NYT article): it’s really strange how the Japanese media and even some government offices promote him. He’s someone who publicly prides himself on his lack of morals. He has a big following among the young in Japan. Japan has long been a military-like rigid country that discouraged individuality. Durkheim might diagnose that Nishimura’s popularity is a new symptom of ‘anomie’ (the old symptom is suicide, of course, and it’s a big problem in Japan Japan).
