On Hiroyuki Nishimura (see today’s NYT article): it’s really strange how the Japanese media and even some government offices promote him. He’s someone who publicly prides himself on his lack of morals. He has a big following among the young in Japan. Japan has long been a military-like rigid country that discouraged individuality. Durkheim might diagnose that Nishimura’s popularity is a new symptom of ‘anomie’ (the old symptom is suicide, of course, and it’s a big problem in Japan Japan).
There’s another figure like Nishimura in Japan, Takayuki Horie (aka Horiemon). Nishimura has long evaded court orders and Horiemon has served prison time. Both preach utter selfishness and challenge the concept of the welfare state. The LDP—so keen on cutting back social security spending—might be giving its tacit consent to the media to promote these guys in an attempt to turn young voters against the welfare state. A very GOPesque strategy.
