The US and NATO have been using Ukraine as a proxy state. They were involved in the coup back in 2014. There have been attacks on ethnic Russians in the Donbass. This is a great deal of meddling in a state bordering Russia, in its sphere of influence, and therefore a serious threat to Russian interests.
After repeated attempts to get the western powers to back off, Russia finally had no choice but to take military action.
With Nazi Germany, it was over the city of Danzig. At this point, the city was comprised of a large proportion of ethnic Germans. Just like in the Donbass, these Germans were being attacked. Hitler wanted to protect these Germans, and started negotiations to switch control of the city to Germany.
However, Churchill promised the Poles that if they went to war with Germany, Britain would back them. Of course, as soon as the war started, Britain largely abandoned the Poles -- Churchill cared nothing for them and merely wanted an excuse for war. At the end of the war, Poland was handed over to the USSR without so much as a protest. So much for defending Poland.
The point is that regardless of your opinions on Nazi Germany or Russia, western meddling is what has caused war to break out. It is the same everywhere -- such as in the middle east. Funding the "freedom fighters" against the USSR in Afghanistan who would become the Taliban and Al Qaida. Funding the Syrian rebels who would become ISIS.
The US, Britain, NATO can't help themselves but stick their fingers in every pie they can and make the situation much worse than it would be otherwise.
